Five Times Spreadsheets Rescued Me

This article is a little more on the personal side. As the creator of Spreadsheet Life, I believe that spreadsheets have the potential to improve the lives of almost anyone.

Spreadsheets don’t have to be complicated, they don’t have to be ugly, and they don’t have to be exclusively for work.

In fact, here are five times spreadsheets came to the rescue in my personal life!

No. 1 – My First Budget

When I finally got to the age to start taking some personal responsibility for my money, I desperately needed a way to manage it.

Keeping track of things with pen and paper was an option, but that seemed too tedious for me. Budget apps and software also seemed promising, but they were too complicated or expensive.

Don’t forget that this was a time in my life when my budget was pretty small.

So how did I manage? I kept track of everything in a spreadsheet.

It was my saving grace, it sparked my love of spreadsheets, and I have never looked back since then.

No. 2 – Building my College Schedule

When I was in college, scheduling was always one of the most important things for me. My schedule had largely been out of my control growing up, just like most kids out there.

I woke up and went to school. I came home after tennis practice and finished all of my homework. And I spent what free time I had after that playing games or with family.

But when I went to college, I had so much free time! What I did and when I did it was completely up to me. I knew right then and there that managing my time and carefully crafting my schedule would be one of my greatest keys to success.

So what did I do? I mapped out my schedules and plans with spreadsheets. Given the power and flexibility of spreadsheets, I had the freedom to keep things organized in the way that best fit me.

I don’t know what I would have used or done otherwise!

No. 3 – Keeping Track of my Reading

So my family holds a reading competition every year!

The person who reads the most pages from January 1st through December 25th is crowned the victor. They get to keep and hold onto the reading trophy throughout the next year until a new winner is decided.

Given the need to track my books and pages read, I created a reading log in Excel! Ever since then, I’ve kept track of all my reading in a spreadsheet. It’s one of my absolute favorite tools to use!

If this sounds like fun to you, there are several reading trackers you can download here at Spreadsheet Life. I’ve listed a few below.

No. 4 – Planning my Wedding

If you’ve ever planned a wedding before or know someone who has, then you probably have a feel for how much that goes into it.

Needless to say, it’s pretty tedious and a bit strenuous. I’m not quite sure what my wife and I would have done if it weren’t for the power and accessibility of spreadsheets.

We used Google Sheets to keep track of so many details, the most obvious one being our budget. Thankfully, we were able to keep everything organized, and our wedding was better than we could have ever dreamed.

If using spreadsheets to help you plan your wedding sounds like something you’re interested in, you can check out the Wedding Planner Toolbox available here at Spreadsheet Life.

The Wedding Planner Toolbox is a full suite of Google Sheets templates that will help guide you through the entire wedding planning process.

I can guarantee from personal experience that these will help and make planning your wedding a whole lot easier!

No. 5 – Managing my Business

The ironic thing about Spreadsheet Life is that it runs on spreadsheets. I manage and keep track of everything in Excel and Google Sheets.

Whether it’s my blog post schedule, my list of templates, or my future goals and plans for the business, I keep track of it all in many different spreadsheets.

I don’t think I would be able to run and manage Spreadsheet Life if it weren’t for the power of spreadsheets. I am so thankful that spreadsheets exist, and I am so grateful that they are a part of my life.

I truly believe in the power of spreadsheets and their ability to improve the lives of others. And that includes you!
