Email Newsletter Challenge 19

This week’s challenge will require knowledge of how times are stored in spreadsheets.

Think you’re up to the task? Download the spreadsheet challenge using the links below.

This week, your task is to calculate the End Time given the Start Time and Number of Hours.

Enter the following formula into cell D4.

Times are stored as numbers in both Excel and Google Sheets. More specifically, times are stored as fractions of 24.

In both Excel and Google Sheets, one day (24 hours) is equivalent to the number one. And since a specific time represents a fraction of one day, it is stored as a fraction of 24.

For example, 6:00 AM is equivalent to 0.25 in Excel and Google Sheets. That’s because 6:00 AM represents six hours of the day. So if you do the math, you get:

6 / 24 = 0.25

Therefore, if you look back at the formula in our solution:

You divide the number of hours in cell C4 by 24 to transform that number into a time value. You then add that time value to the start time (cell B4), and this gives you the end time.

And of course to complete the challenge, simply copy the formula down to cell D10 using the fill handle.
