Create a Dropdown Menu in Google Sheets

In this article, we will show you how to create a dropdown menu in Google Sheets.

Dropdown menus are useful for limiting the type of data the spreadsheet user can enter into a cell. They are also useful for giving the user an easily accessible list of options they can quickly pick from to make data entry a whole lot easier.

How to Create a Dropdown Menu

To create a dropdown menu in Google Sheets, follow the steps listed below.

Step 1 – Select the Cells to Apply the Dropdown Menu

The first step is to select the cells you would like to apply the dropdown menu to.

In our example, let’s say you want to add a dropdown menu to the range A1:A6. Start by selecting this range.

Step 2 – Select Data Validation

Next, click on the Data tab in the Google Sheets menus, and then click on Data Validation.

The Data validation rules panel will open on the right side of your spreadsheet. Go ahead and click on the Add rule button.

Step 3 – Setup the Criteria

Under Criteria, make sure that the Dropdown option is selected.

You can now add in the items you want to be available for selection within the dropdown menu.

Step 4 – Change Chip to Arrow (Optional)

Google Sheets recently updated their dropdown data validation to default to chips as you can see below.

If you are more comfortable with the original look (where there is just a small arrow in each data validated cell), you can click on Advanced options and select Arrow under display style.

Click on Done to apply the dropdown menus. Try them out by clicking on the down arrow on the right side of the cells that contain the data validation.

And that’s how you can create dropdown menus in Google Sheets.
