Can VLOOKUP Be Used Across Worksheets

One of the most common questions I get is – can VLOOKUP be used across worksheets?

The answer is a resounding yes. You can use all functions and formulas across worksheets.

I will show you how to use the VLOOKUP function across worksheets in Excel. This method also works the same way in Google Sheets.

You can also download the practice workbook to see it for yourself!

The Setup

Here is my setup. I have my lookup value and return value cell on Sheet2, but my data is on Sheet1.

The goal is to calculate the return value on Sheet2 using VLOOKUP. In the process, I will reference the lookup value on Sheet2 and the data on Sheet1.

The Solution

Let’s look at the solution now that I have explained the setup.

Starting on Sheet2 in cell C2 (where I want my final result), I enter the following formula.

=VLOOKUP(A2, Sheet1!A2:C8, 3, FALSE)

The VLOOKUP function references the lookup value in cell A2 on Sheet2. It also references the data on Sheet1 in the cell range A2:D12.

The number 3 forces the VLOOKUP function to get the return value from the Role column (3rd column).

The FALSE value for the last argument forces the VLOOKUP function to search for an exact match.

As a result, I get the final return value by using VLOOKUP to reference cells across different worksheets.
