Calculate Percentage of the Grand Total

In this article, I will show you how to calculate the percentage of the grand total for each row of your data set.

For example, let’s say you have sales numbers like this. The goal is to see how much each sales number contributes to the overall total.

In other words, you want to calculate the percentage of the total. Here is how you can do it!

The Formula

To calculate the percentage of the overall total, use the following formula.

= cell_Containing_Data / SUM ( full_Data_Range )

In our example, that formula would look like this.

= A2 / SUM ( $A$2:$A$7 )

Notice that the reference inside of the SUM function is an absolute reference. The absolute reference is required for the formula to be copied down for all of the other rows.

Once you have your formula written, you can use the fill handle to copy the formula down for all of the other rows that contain data.

And that is how you can calculate the percentage of the grand total for each row within your data range.

By the way, this method works the same way for both Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
